Are you smarter than a fifth grader? Well, I’m not! I discovered this on my recent visit to Escape Artist. “The one hour escape adventure” is located at their new 209 East Stone Avenue location. That might sound easy, but I almost missed it. Twice. Make sure to keep you eyes peeled for the number 209 on top of the white wrought iron stand. Sign to come soon!
Let me back up. Maybe you have no idea what an Escape Room is. An Escape Room is a family friendly experience where you work with your “team” to escape the room before time runs out. You’re given one hour to solve puzzles, find hidden clues, crack codes and more. Escape Artist has three themed rooms, each with a specific assignment. While there was nothing out of the ordinary about the exterior of the building, the inside reminded me of The Hollywood Tower of Terror Hotel. There was nothing spooky about the owners though, Will & Kim Rutherford are super friendly and easy to communicate with! Will introduced himself and gave us a list of rules along with a short description of our mission.
My crew was there to test out Escape Artist’s newest room, The Inventor’s Enigma. In this challenge, the Inventor goes missing and our job was to save him from whatever contraption he lands himself in before the hour is up. Our group of six ranged in age from eight to sixty- five. Had it not been for my eleven year old son and his eight year old friend, we would not have made it past the first room. In an attempt to preserve the illusion, the details end here. However, since we’re friends, I will let you know that you must not discount anything in the room. Every prop you see plays an intricate part in the story. After our epic fail, I can’t stress enough the importance of working TOGETHER! Regardless of your GPA, this is not a one-man job.
Escape Artist is the perfect outing for families, business groups and friends. As soon as our time ran out, the youngest members of our troop were begging to try another room (literally, they followed Will down the steps pleading for another chance.) The adults, on the other hand, may or may not have felt a little embarrassed at their obvious lack of craftiness. Oh well, I guess we’ll just have to go back.
Push Escape Artist to the top of your “To Do” list. Just be sure to take along one or two participants who can order off the Kids’ Menu!
You can start your first (or second) escape room adventure by choosing between their newest room The Inventor’s Enigma as well as The Cabin or The Fall Out here. Be sure to be on the look out for even more escape rooms coming soon via their Facebook and Instagram!
