Brace yourself, ’cause you’re about to get all kinds of fillings when you hear about Greenville’s newest local hero, dentist Dr. Donald Ridgell.
Dr. Ridgell was raised right here in Greenville, and attended JL Mann High School before going on to study at Clemson University and The Medical University of South Carolina, where he now serve as an adjunct professor at the Charleston campus. Dr. Ridgell completed his residency at University of North Carolina Dental School Prosthodontics, and went on to start the first exclusive prosthodontic practice in the Upstate in 1988. In fact, you have probably seen his office on 321 Mills Avenue, where he has been faithfully serving the community for over 30 years.
In addition to providing consistent, quality care for his patients, Dr. Ridgell is a member of the ADA, SCDA, and a past board member of the SC Dental Board, the Piedmont Dental District, and is the Deputy State board examiner for the SC Dental Association Prosthodontic Board. According to Suzie Foley, Executive Director of the Greenville Free Medical Clinic, Dr. Ridgell’s effort to solidify a partnership between the MUSC Dental School,Bon Secour’s St. Francis Hospital has enabled the clinic to expand services to include restorative work, and increased dental care from 2 days a week to 4 ½ days a week.
As if this wasn’t impressive enough, for the past 10 years Dr. Ridgell has lead a team from Greenville to the Dominican Republic to serve at a missions hospital/clinic, Solid Rock International in San Juan, DR, and is strongly engaged in the SC DAD program, which seeks to provide free dental care to the citizens of South Carolina.
It is for all this work and more, that Dr. Ridgell was appropriately awarded the Private Practice Practitioner of the Year Award from the American College of Prosthodontics. Dr. Ridgell won for the Southeastern Region, and three other professionals were awarded from other regions of the United States. We are so proud to have a Greenville native receive this honor, and so thankful for everything Dr. Ridgell has done in our community!
