When I was first asked to workout at Alliance Champions Training Center I knew nothing about it aside from its red and black color scheme. I had no idea what type of workout I would be walking into or if it was going to be my “scene,” but being up for anything that promises a good sweat I went to check it out.
What strikes you first is the location. While most studios and gyms are popping up in Downtown Greenville or in the Five Forks area, the location on Haywood Road is relatively quiet. It was nice being able to avoid some of the busier parts of town. The facility itself is large and open and when you walk in it immediately feels like more of a training facility than a gym or class workout environment. Honestly, that’s likely because it is.
Strip down the atmosphere and frills from most big box or boutique locations and you’d be left with what you find at Alliance. Equipment and people that just want to work. While a good portion of the space is an open mat area for martial arts training there is also a long expanse of what felt like turf and weights/equipment. The primarily Brazilian Ju-Jitsu training center offers functional training that makes use of that non-mat space.
I specifically tried one of the group classes and when I jumped in I was struck by the mix of people. There was a good mix of men and women of all ages (under 30 up to rocking the silver hair.) If you’re worried about not fitting in at a training center like this, you will. Unlike other circuit style workouts I have done, the entire class did each leg of the workout together. While we were broken into teams, we all did the same moves at the same time. The use of equipment was minimal and only when it had a direct purpose. While I love throwing in accessories – give me resistance bands, bosu balls, TRX straps – anything really to keep me interested the use of this equipment was different. The entire workout was less about the show and more about the results. If Alliance could have a motto I would suggest: come in, work hard, get results. A few days later and I’m still sore.
If you want to find a fitness facility that offers more specialized training than bigger box gyms and want to mix it up outside of specific boutique locations definitely check this place out. They offer their first training session for FREE. Check out their full site here.
As always until next time!
