Greenville’s newest professional sports team is bringing high-level soccer to the Upstate. Greenville Football Club is part of the National Premiere Soccer League, the 4th Tier in the US Soccer Pyramid. The GVL FC now adds to Greenville’s already existing sports scene with the Greenville Drive and Swamp Rabbits in providing affordable entertainment for the entire family!

Recently, we had the opportunity to attend a GVL FC game from Eugene E. Stone III Stadium at Furman University. Right off the bat, the kids were happy because, well, have you seen the campus?! Before I could turn off the engine, the two seven year olds in tow were running around and playing tag across the perfectly manicured grass. The energy level only increased from that point.
This was my first visit to Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium. I was impressed with the seating and the open layout. The 3,000 seat stadium was comfortable. There was plenty of room for the kids to run around without getting in the way of other fans and I could actually breathe. We’ve all been to games where you sit for two (or more) hours scrunched up, elbow to elbow in a seat much smaller than your “seat!” But maybe that’s just me. This was my favorite feature. Between periods, the kids had fun rolling down the large embankment, while the officials laughed.

One of GVL FC’s goals (pun intended) is community. I definitely saw this in action as the players interacted with fans of all ages. Don’t take my word for it, when I asked Preston what his favorite part of the night was, he wasted no time telling me, “I liked it a whole lot when the ball came over to me and I got to kick it back to the player. ” Might not sound like much, but it’s often the small, simple gestures that make the biggest impact on a young heart.
I was taken back by the passion of the fans. Their enthusiasm was contagious, even to someone who has little (and by little, I mean no) knowledge of soccer. Our crew had a wonderful time and we look forward to the next game!
