According to Preston, life doesn’t get any better than missing bedtime for a baseball game. He was living the dream as we made our way to the Greenville Drive’s Fluor Field last Wednesday.
Parking is no longer an issue for us on game nights. I don’t know why it’s taken so long to discover this, but Greenville High School charges $5 to park in their lot. It’s directly across the street from the side entrance to the field. Every dime goes to support their freshman academy, special education department and athletic teams.
PSA: Handbags, purses and back packs are no longer allowed in the park. Just like other large venues, you must have a clear bag to get through the gate. We saw three people get turned away so you can’t beat the system.
We made it a point to arrive early to check out the playground. I love this feature at Fluor Field. It allows parents the opportunity to enjoy baseball and fresh air without having to entertain toddlers who have no idea what’s going on. A trip to the top of the Green Monster was the only way we were able to peel Preston off the slides.
Having seen the original Green Monster on a visit to Fenway Park, I think I enjoyed this the most. The view was spectacular! I had no idea you could purchase tickets to sit there. I’ll definitely keep that in mind for next time.
Once the game was underway, Preston didn’t move. He is so passionate and screams at the players like a retired coach (minus the explicit language.) My job is to console him after every foul ball that doesn’t land in his glove. By console, I mean threaten to leave the park if he doesn’t stop pouting. Maybe one day…
I had to sit on my sixty-five year old mother to keep her from dancing in the aisle during the crowd sing-a-longs. Every Southern native loves Sweet Caroline! Fans went wild when Reedy Rip’It and friends blasted t’shirts into the stands. Preston didn’t catch one of those either (poor guy.)
It’s so much more than baseball. The Greenville Drive does a great job offering something for everyone.
If you’re like me and don’t make time for dinner before you go, you’ll find a wide variety of restaurant favorites inside the park. There’s Chick-fil-A, BBQ, Mexican and Subway (to name a few), or you can always snack on peanuts and Cracker Jacks.
Fortunately for us, Wednesday night featured the Greenville County Schools’ Reading All-Stars’ parade and the Safe Kids’ free helmet station. Preston got to see some of his friends from school and was fitted with a new bike helmet.
Looking back, Wednesday’s dream date with the Drive was worth Thursday morning’s struggle to get Preston out of bed.
