The search is on! How long do you think it will take you to find small rodents hiding along Greenville’s Main Street? Downtown offers plenty of entertainment for natives and visitors of all ages. Thanks to Jim Ryan, we have Mice on Main.
In 2001, Ryan was a student at Christ Church School, just a few blocks off Main Street. At that point in time, downtown was fast becoming a hot spot on the south end of the map. He decided to capitalize on the popularity of his hometown. Determined to step outside the box when senior projects rolled around, he teamed up with local sculptor, Zan Wells, to create the ultimate scavenger hunt starring nine bronze mice!
Posted inside the doors of Hyatt Regency (NOMA Square entrance), you will find the list of clues to begin your adventure. Now you’re ready to stroll and search all the way to the Westin Poinsett where the journey ends.
In 2007, Linda Kelly and her granddaughter, Sarah, were looking for the mice. “Is there a book about the mice?” Sarah asked. When her grandmother answered “no,” Sarah told her she should write one. Kelly pitched the idea to Jim Ryan and Zan Wells. Like they say, the rest is history. The book, Mice on Main, made its’ debut August 23, 2008, at the Metropolitan Arts Council.
Grab a copy of the book just inside the doors of Mast General Store. Join Maggie, Marvin, Aunt Mifflin, Uncle Miles, Marvin Jr., Marcley, Mitch and teeny tiny Millie on their quest for freedom. If you’d like to add a little sparkle to your adventure, you can pick up a plush version of your favorite furry character too.
My boys chose to spend their day with teeny tiny Millie. Not only did she “help” them find her eight family members, but she rode the trolley and enjoyed watching the falls from the Liberty Bridge!
No matter how many times we’ve found the Mice, the search never fails to deliver a fresh set of smiles.
