Ever wake up feeling philosophical? Well then it’s time you’ve experienced the wisdom that Downtown Greenville has to offer.
A stroll down Main is the remedy. Scattered along the sidewalk from McBee Avenue to Court Street, you’ll find stones engraved with quotations. Some witty and others wise, these proverbs are certain to add a little enlightenment to your step.
I have no idea how long these passages have been a part of the sidewalk. I only noticed them a few months ago. I’m betting most of you are like me and don’t look down at your feet while walking. Well, maybe if you have on new shoes.
You’ll want to read them all, but I thought I would share a few that jumped out at me.
“If you find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere.” Isn’t this true of life? I don’t know about you, but depending on the obstacles, I’m often tempted to avoid the path. However, it’s been my experience that overcoming obstacles is what makes the walk worthwhile.
“Most people would learn from their mistakes if they weren’t so busy denying that they made them.” I’m pretty sure this one was written for me. Accepting responsibility for our actions is easier said than done. Disappointments are a part of life, but “fessin’ up” to failure is not my strong suit.
“Putting off a hard thing makes it impossible.” I don’t know about you, but I am guilty of putting off things that are intimidating or pull me out of my comfort zone. Fear of failure is common, but when it prevents us from trying, we lose. Tackling the hard things in life is what sets us up for success.
I didn’t mean to get all Dear Abby on you. Apparently these stones made quite the impression on me.
Not just any city or town would go to such lengths to make a walk down their street so entertaining. Watch the weather forecast for the next sunny, sixty-degree day and make your way downtown for a meander along Greenville’s Main Street!
