As a writer, I’ve always gravitated toward words rather than paint. Canvases – whether sketched, splashed, or poured – were never really my thing. That changed when I discovered my son, JP (who has autism), had a natural gift for abstract painting.
JP approaches art the same way he approaches the world: creatively and unconventionally. His work is built around color – bold combinations poured onto canvas and shaped through movement, air, and experimentation. What began as curiosity quickly became something more. Watching his artistic process unfold gave me a new appreciation for the power of creative expression – and for Greenville’s thriving local arts community!

First Fridays: A Monthly Celebration of Greenville Art
The deeper introduction to Greenville’s arts scene came through Metropolitan Arts Council and its popular monthly event, First Fridays. Held on the first Friday of each month from 6-9pm, First Fridays invites the public to explore Greenville’s studios and galleries as they open their doors for an evening dedicated to art. Visitors can meet artists and explore new exhibits. For many artists, it’s also an opportunity to connect directly with the community – something that makes Greenville’s arts culture feel especially personal.
JP recently participated in his first First Fridays event. Like many artists, he’s more comfortable behind the canvas, but the experience was an exciting introduction to the broader arts community that thrives throughout the Upstate.
First Fridays is just one of several initiatives supported by the Metropolitan Arts Council. Another favorite event is Arts After Dark (every third Thursday of the month!) which takes place during the Piedmont Natural Gas Downtown Alive concert series starting Thursday, March 19th at NOMA Square. Highlighting different local artists set-up along Main Street while live music fills the air, creating a festival-like environment where art, music and community intersect from 5:30-8:30pm. Downtown Alive benefiting MAC will continue every Thursday with a different musical act each week with local vendors, food trucks and more now through August 27th, 2026.
Visit the MAC website to find artist bios and participating galleries.
