Greenville’s summer arts calendar just got a major upgrade! The South Carolina New Play Festival has released its first announcement for the 2026 season, and the line-up signals a bold new chapter for the festival as it heads into its fifth year. Running July 29 through August 9, the festival will bring original musical theater, Broadway star power, and a stunning new venue to the heart of downtown Greenville. Among the headline – making news: SCNPF’s first full production, a brand new original musical inspired by a Greenville-born civil rights pioneer; the debut of a historic 1940s spiegeltent venue and the addition of late night variety show to the festival mix.

A World Premiere with Deep Greenville Roots
The centerpiece of the 2026 season is The House That I Lived In: Josh White’s America, an original musical by Donnetta Lavinia Grays. The production inspired by the true-life story of Josh White, the Greenville-born blues and folk musician who rose to prominence in the 1930s and 1940s and became a powerful voice in the early civil rights movement. Over the past three years, SCNPF facilitated extensive research and interviews between Grays and members of Josh White’s family, along with local historians and scholars from the Greenville community. Many of those voices – including Ruth Ann Butler, Mary Duckett and Josh White Jr. – passed away during the development process. Their stories now live on through this musical, making the production not only world premiere, but also a preservation of Greenville history.
A New Venue: The Cristal Palace Spiegeltent
Both the world premiere musical and the festival’s cabaret events will take place inside the Cristal Palace, a historic spiegeltent dating back to the 1940s. The European – style tent will be erected on the lawn outside New Realm Brewing, placing live theater in one of downtown’s most vibrant gathering areas. Spiegeltents are known for their intimate atmosphere, mirrored interiors and old-world glamour – making this a truly unique setting for theater-goers of the Upstate. Returning as a fan-favorite festival event, the Broadway Cabaret gets a star-studded upgrade in 2026 with Drew Gehling, currently known to many for his role in & Juliet. Taking place August 9, the cabaret combines an intimate concert-style performance with a behind-the-scenes interview, giving audiences a rare look at life on Broadway. Gehling’s resume includes Jersey Boys, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, and originating the role of Dr. Pomatter in Waitress. Expect powerhouse vocals, personal stories and a one-night-only experience designed specifically for Greenville audiences. The House That I Lived In: Josh White’s America and the Broadway Cabaret starring Drew Gehling will take place inside the Cristal Palace spiegeltent outside New Realm Brewing. Tickets are on sale now at scnpf.org.
