Nobody has deeper Southern roots than a lifelong Greenville native (hello, it’s me). Born and raised here, I’ve watched our town transform over the years into the vibrant community it is today. Seeing Greenville recognized beyond our borders is exciting – but one thing that has always defined this place is something much more simple – its generous spirit!
That spirit will be on full display when Southern Roots: A BBQ Reunion returns to Trailblazer Park in Travelers Rest for the fifth annual on Saturday, April 11th. This all-inclusive event has become one of the Upstate’s most anticipated food gatherings, bringing together talented pit masters, chefs, musicians, and artisans for an afternoon of incredible food and fellowship. Guests can sample dishes from some of the region’s best barbecue masters while enjoying live music, craft vendors, and a relaxed day outdoors.
For those who opt for the VIP experience (almost sold out!), the festivities actually begin earlier in the day with a special Seafood Fest Kickoff. The coastal-inspired pre-party gives attendees a chance to enjoy fresh seafood creations from participating chefs before the main gates open. It’s a more intimate setting where guests can meet the chefs, enjoy craft beverages, and ease into the day’s celebration before the barbecue reunion officially begins.
The heart of Southern Roots goes far beyond barbecue. Greenville has always been a place where neighbors show up for one another. Local nonprofits regularly host fundraisers to support people battling illnesses like cancer. But what about the countless rare conditions that affect only a very small percentage of the population? Diseases that affect fewer than two thousand people are often referred to as “orphan diseases.” In medical circles, they’re sometimes called “Zebra Diseases.” The phrase comes from a saying doctors learn early in training: “When you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras.” Unfortunately, many families are living in the Zebra category.
One of those conditions is called Kleefstra Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder caused by a missing or mutated gene. The syndrome can cause developmental delays and intellectual disabilities. Families affected often face a long search for answers and support. Southern Roots raises funds for IDefine: The Kleefstra Syndrome Foundation, a nonprofit created by determined parents. Founded in 2020, the organization is dedicated to discovering life-changing treatments and cures for intellectual disabilities stemming from genetic disorders while connecting families and medical professionals.
Their mission is simple but powerful: helping children and families living with these conditions build a future where they have the tools they need to define their own paths.
A Reunion with a Purpose
Southern Roots BBQ Reunion offers the community a chance to come together in support of this mission. On Saturday, April 11th from 12-4pm at Trailblazer Park will fill with the sounds of live music and the unmistakable aroma of barbecue as chefs and pit masters serve up their best creations. Come prepared to sample dishes from across the culinary spectrum while enjoying beer, wine, spirits and browsing artisan booths.
It’s a day built around great food but, more importantly, it’s about supporting families who need encouragement and resources. That’s something Greenville does well. When our community gathers – whether around a table, a festival, or a cause – we show just how strong our Southern roots really are!
You can still buy your tickets to support a great cause for a great time here.
