The Great Cane Brake Affair at Historic Hopkins Farm

Greenville’s Only Revolutionary-Era Battle Site Becomes the Stage for a One-Night-Only Friends of the Reedy River Fundraiser
History doesn’t usually come with live music, tasty food, and an interactive experience, but that’s exactly what’s happening at The Great Canebrake Affair, a unique outdoor fundraiser set on the historic grounds of Hopkins Farm, site of the Battle of the Great Canebrake.
Fought nearly 250 years ago, the Battle of the Great Canebrake is the only Revolutionary-era battle ever held in Greenville County, making this event a rare opportunity for the public to experience a nationally significant historic landscape while supporting a modern-day cause: a clean and thriving Reedy River.
From 6:00 to 9:30 PM, guests will gather under the open sky for an evening that blends local 1776 inspired food and drinks, live music by one of Greenville’s favorite bands, and community celebration with captive storytelling from historian Durant Ashmore, who will share the little known truths, legends, and surprising human moments tied to the battle, right where it happened.
Beyond the history, the night leans into fun, featuring a silent auction, raffle, interactive games, and line dancing (no experience required) creating an atmosphere that’s welcoming, lively, and accessible to history buffs and first-timers alike.
Proceeds from The Great Cane Brake Affair support Friends of the Reedy River’s ongoing efforts to protect and restore the Reedy River, while funding environmental education, hands-on restoration projects, and long-term watershed stewardship that benefits the entire community.
“This event brings together history, place, and purpose in a way that’s rare,” said Andrea Payment, Director of Development and Community Engagement. “It’s not every day you can stand on a Revolutionary War battlefield, sip local wine, and know your ticket is helping protect the river that runs through our community.”
Tickets are limited, and early interest is strong.
