If you aren’t familiar with smoothie bowls, they have become all the rage amongst the health conscious set. For good reason too. A thick smoothie base put in a bowl and topped with fresh fruit can feel closer to a soft serve treat than a smoothie and thanks to all of the fruit, toppings, and add ins these bad boys can easily become a meal.
The primary base for most smoothie bowls around Greenville is acai. It’s thick, purplish and doesn’t have an overpowering flavor. The most common toppings are banana, strawberry and blueberry along with something for texture. Think granola, shredded coconut, whip, or a drizzle of nut butter.
While they can be high in sugar thanks to all that fruit, in my opinion they are a pretty great. If you’re looking for a healthy treat that you can enjoy as it warms up, below are the top places to snag one for yourself:
- Southern Pressed Juicery (Downtown GVL)
- Kuka Juice (West Village)
- CocoBowlz (food truck usually stationed right off Liberty Bridge)
- Clean Juice (Woodruff Road)
While each location offers a slightly different take on their smoothie bowl they are all tasty. All range from about $9-11. My favorite bowls so far are at Kuka Juice and CocoBowlz. I love the large serving size and topping options at both locations. CocoBowlz has been a recent favorite with peanut butter drizzle instead of almond butter.
I also love that while acai is the typical base you can make any smoothie into a bowl at Kuka Juice or chose from from some fun flavors at Clean Juice like one with activated charcoal! After eating a bowl, you will not only feel full and have satisfied a sweet craving, you’ll have also done something that was good for you. Win, win!
Have you tried a smoothie bowl yet? Where is your favorite place? Can’t wait to hear from you!
