When I first learned about Upstate Spine & Sport I assumed it was focused on the rehab of injuries only. I’ll be the first to tell you, there is a lot more to it than that. The business is owned and operated by Dr. David Jolson and Mrs. Fran Jolson and between them they offer a wide range of services that not only treat pain but are also beneficial in injury prevention, recovery, and overall wellness.
Since I didn’t have a specific injury (knock on wood) I went in to get my movement evaluated. First off, you don’t need a referral or to go through insurance. I was surprised by how easily accessible this level of care is. Almost anyone can simply make an appointment. The space isn’t anything like I expected either. There is a table for adjustments, but also a separate room flanked with mirrors where you can be taken through a “workout” of sorts all the way up to more complex movements like a golf swing. There is also a separate space for acupuncture.
During my visit Dr. Jolson had me do a variety of poses and sequences to asses how I moved, find any imbalances, and educate me on ways I could be more efficient. The poses ranged from a simple plank to laying flat and lifting my head. While they may sound easy, to do them correctly and adjust any weaknesses was challenging. To be honest, I broke a sweat. It was absolutely mind-blowing to see how pulling my shoulders back, expanding through my mid section, or disengaging my lower back muscles made such a huge difference. After the evaluation I was able to get stretched and release any tightness which is always appreciated given the various workouts I do.
After only two sessions with Dr. Jolson I was able to integrate what I learned into my workouts and even into a few everyday scenarios. It has impacted my spinning, yoga, barre, and especially functional moves with weights. So why does this matter? Although I don’t currently have an injury without correcting some of the imbalances or weak spots I had I was leaving myself open to get one. Since I want to avoid running into pain in the next few decades I find it’s extremely important to learn how to adjust and prevent it now. I can also see this being beneficial if you’re looking to simply up your game.
Whether you’re looking to learn more about your body, you have pain you need to manage, or are training for something specific, like a race, Upstate Spine & Sport has it all. If you come with pain they want to get you out of pain and correcting your movement so you can return to your activities. If they are educating you on the mechanics of movement after a few sessions you’ll have the knowledge to implement the principles on your own.
