Sometimes hamburgers tell stories. They show up at little league games, lunches and smoking on the grill at the end of really long days.
In Greenville, some burgers come with something extra – history on the walls, familiar faces behind the counter, and memories that taste as good as they feel. With that in mind, there was only one place this series could begin…
Northgate Soda Shop
918 North Main Street, Greenville 29609

Nostalgic is the word I’d use to describe Northgate. If you’re a Greenville native with the slightest bit of grey hair, you understand. This is the kind of place where history doesn’t sit quietly in a museum. It hangs on the walls. It leans over the counter, listening in on conversations. Every inch of Northgate is dressed in memorabilia. The walls showcase Greenville’s rich history – snapshots of another time, when soda fountains were gathering places and hamburgers were served with a side of community.
Opened in 1947, the soda shop has been a steady presence through decades of change. In 2009, it found new caretakers when Ren and Iris Bell stepped in – not to reinvent it, but to protects what already made the spot special. A graduate of Parker High School, Ren still hosts monthly alumni gatherings, turning the restaurant into a living reunion hall.
And then there’s the food.
Personally, I’ve developed an undying love, some might call it an obsession, for the Pimento Cheeseburger. It’s not flashy. It doesn’t try to impress you. It just quietly became the burger I measure all others against – juicy and unapologetically Southern!
Pro Tip: Extra napkins required. Back room table preferred. No rushing allowed.
Menu Call Out: We get the (very crispy) fries and coleslaw every time and you should too!
Consider this your invitation. Hamburger Tales is a journey through the places where burgers are more than food – they’re memory keepers. Where grills have witnessed first dates, post-game celebrations, family dinners, and stories passed down through generations.
It felt right to begin here – with Northgate Soda Shop’s Pimento Cheeseburger.
The grill’s still warm and the stories aren’t finished. Stay tuned for the next Hamburger Tale…
