You’ve likely heard of the benefits of taking an Epsom Salt bath for muscle recovery and it’s not totally out of the realm of possibility that you’ve heard of the dead sea. Well, combine the two and imagine your own little pod of salty water and you’d be getting close to imaging the newly opened Drift Float & Spa.
Drift specializes in floating as a spa service, and the list of benefits is pretty extensive: pain management, mental health, and increased creativity are a few. The idea is to remove outside stimuli such as lights, smells, sounds, and even the strain of gravity so you can totally relax. The spa also offers an oxygen bar and infared sauna, but those will be for another review!
When you arrive you’ll be escorted to a private room which includes a shower and your own float cabin or pod. Everything is automated so the pod will begin to fill with water while you rinse off in the shower and get ready to hop in. Once you get in, the 800+ pounds of Epsom Salt make floating effortless. You’ll spend about 5 minutes getting situated and comfortable as the lights gradually fade out to complete darkness. If you’re a fan of the Netflix series Stranger Things, yes it’s kind of like that.
When I went to Drift I thought the spa was extremely inviting and beautifully decorated. The scene is definitely set to relax. When I hopped in the pod I was pleasantly surprised at how roomy it was. Even with closing the lid all the way down there was plenty of room to reach my arms up overhead. While I did enjoy the floating sensation, I must admit that I couldn’t shut my mind off and found myself bored instead of zen. It quickly became apparent that floating was as much of a meditation exercise as it was a physical sensation. With nothing to look at or listen to I was left alone with my thoughts and unfortunately for me they revolved around my epic to do list.
Drift offers 60 and 90 minute floats and while those are the standard time allotments you can get in and out of the pod at any time. I will say that it does take awhile to get used to being in a dark and silent room so before I knew it my 60 minute session was up. As I left I chatted with the staff about my to do list musings and they encouraged me to try again, just as meditation takes practice for some of us floating will too. Others pick it up right away and go into total and utter relaxation. So, the question is are you going to try it and find out which one you are? Check out Drift’s full site here.
Until next time!
