Wikipedia defines forecast as, “a prediction or estimate of future events, conditions, or trends based on analysis of, current data and historical trends.” The use of words like prediction, estimate, and future confirms the fact that meteorology is not an exact science. Greenville’s topography can pose problems for meteorologists who are simply trying to keep us informed and prepared for any and all weather.
Our city is not called The Foothills for nothing. Mountains can have a tremendous influence on weather patterns. Most residents are not familiar with, or prepared for cold temperatures and freezing precipitation. Adding ice to the weather forecast kicks many of us into overdrive. Isn’t everybody afraid of the unknown? Better safe than sorry certainly applies in this instance. Problems arise when everybody shops for the exact same items at the exact same time.
With Greenville in the middle of icy conditions and snow forecast again this weekend, preparation suddenly feels less optional. This story started with a text from my cousin (Oh, hey, Allyson!) – a rapid-fire list of local places she swears by when winter weather hits. Tools, groceries, coffee, comfort food, and ways to stay entertained if you’re stuck inside. Her list quickly turned into something bigger: a reminder that when Greenville slows down, our local businesses step up!
Here’s a guide to shopping local during an ice/snow storm – from practical necessities to cozy comforts – all found right here in the Upstate.
Power Tools & Storm Prep
When the lights flicker and sidewalks freeze, these spots have your bases covered.

Pantry Basics & Fresh Food
In anticipation of being “trapped” inside, make sure you have plenty of food that doesn’t require appliances. When most people think of grab-and-go foods, protein bars and healthy packaged snacks come to mind. Why not use inclement weather as an excuse to ditch the diet and treat yourself.

Ice storms remind us to slow down, check on neighbors, and support places that support Greenville year-round. Whether you’re stocking up on bread and batteries or just grabbing a book and some hot tea, shopping local keeps our community warm, even when the temperatures drop.
Stay safe and cozy. We’ll see you on the other side of the snow!
