It may not be a surprise to know that February is National Heart Month (hence Valentine’s Day!) This is a special month to focus on all matters related to the Heart.
It is commonly known that heart disease is the number one cause of death for Americans. As a result, I wanted to spend some time helping you take a good look at your Holistic Heart Health. There are several ways we can view the heart, including its physiology and physical health, our emotions and how we can better work with them (rather than against them), and how we can find ways to tap into the wellspring of love that is always available to us, but often elusive! This is how we take a Holistic approach to our heart health.
Let’s get started!
Plaque Buildup: Generally, when we think about Heart Health, we think about great circulation, including a healthy blood pressure. We are aware that the more efficiently our blood can flow through our veins and arteries, the more energized we will feel. Most of us know that challenges with blood pressure are often related to plaque buildup on the walls of our arteries. There is a LOT we can do to improve this situation, such as maintaining a healthy diet, exercising, maintaining a healthy weight, and not smoking.
While there are many pharmaceutical drugs designed specifically to reduce our blood pressure, why not consider a few tools and talents that you may be able to access on your own, prior to needing something from the pharmacy.
Stress and Anxiety: Along with plaque buildup, we often send a second challenge to our hearts through increases in the amount of stress and anxiety in our lives, and a lack of understanding about how to alleviate this stress and anxiety, which places unnecessary challenges to our heart by increasing our heartbeat and elevating cortisol levels for long periods of time.
Habitual Behavior Patterns: Finally, being able to notice these challenges, through AWARENESS, allows for the opportunity to move into positive ways to reverse this pattern. Mindful awareness of what we are feeling is a key component to beginning to proactively improve our heart health in holistic ways.
This is where Holistic Heart Health can come into play. There is a lot WE CAN DO for the heart!
Mindfulness Meditation: Practicing Mindfulness, through stepping into a regular meditation routine, can also help you to pay better attention to the choices that you are making, on a day-to-day basis.
Mindful Eating: We live in a world of processed and cured meats, fried food, sweet tea, soft drinks, cookies and candies. Choosing these foods in moderation, while balancing them with healthy foods like leafy green vegetables, whole grain breads, berries, and avocados can provide better health to the heart. Unfortunately, the processed foods are more readily available, and we quickly get into a habit of unconsciously choosing them over the healthier options. Attending a Mindful Eating course can assist in making more conscious choices, on behalf of our hearts!
Supplemental Essential Oils: There are several essential oils, including CBD oil, which can contribute to your effort to get (or keep) your heart operating in a healthy and efficient way!
Mindful Movement: Stepping into opportunities to keep your body moving helps your heart to get exercise as well! Any time you choose to take the stairs, instead of the elevator, or park at the back of the parking lot, you are giving a gift to your heart! You are providing the opportunity to strengthen that muscle, which pumps toxins out of your body and helps clear out the buildup that may currently be in your arteries.
