A diverse accounting company that is lead by a local resident of the Upstate, Matt Green. Get your exclusive intro with Matt on how he started Ledger Medial, accounting advice and more! Without further ado, let’s go meet Matt Green of Ledger Medial.
360: How did the idea of Ledger Medial come to life?
Matt: I was fortunate enough to work under brilliant people in the accounting profession from whom I learned a lot. However, I have always had my own way of doing things and I became overwhelmed with ideas of how I knew things could be done differently. Also, as someone that went back to school for accounting later in life I am able to empathize with taxpayers that truly have no idea of how taxes work or business owners that have a passion and a dream, yet do not know where to start, or how to grow after getting started. I wanted an accounting term such as “ledger” in the name, yet truthfully had never heard the term “medial.” After hours in a thesaurus, I put the two words together and knew the name represented exactly what I wanted to build.
360: Tell us about the services Ledger Medial offers.
Matt: Bookkeeping, tax preparation for businesses and individuals, tax planning, LLC registration, tax planning, all-inclusive business advisory, with a hint of business consulting.
360: What’s your favorite part of your job?
Matt: I enjoy meeting different types of entrepreneurs. Accounting/tax is my product, yet business is my passion, primarily in terms of marketing, sales, and strategic growth.
360: If you could give us one piece of accounting and tax advice, what would it be?
Matt: Simplify! If you are a business owner, have one business bank account and do not commingle with personal funds.
360: When you’re not working, what do you love to do in Greenville?
Matt: With my office being downtown in Endeavor, I enjoy walking downtown and seeing all of the local art and taking in the ever-evolving vibe. I also enjoy going to Greenville Drive baseball games.
360: What’s next for Ledger Medial?
Matt: Automation and CFO services (together and separately). I actually just automated about 60% of the tax client onboarding process and believe that tax prep can ultimately be 90% automated. I truly believe that between 5 -10% of what happens in an accounting firm technically needs to be handled by an accountant. For this reason I am creating a list of every possible task and have a dream of redesigning the entire process…I know this sounds ambitious. There are many companies and individuals that claim to offer CFO services yet that is not reality. In addition to giving a clear analysis of an organization’s financial health, a CFO is forward thinking for the sake of increasing profitability, acquiring funding, increasing the business valuation, and generating cash forecasts and what-if scenarios. There is also a balance, generally in terms of timing, between appearing financially healthy and tax savings.
What’s next for Ledger Medial continued…
Matt: Along with learning how to automate most of this, I am meeting with all types of lenders and investors to gain an inside perspective of what businesses need to obtain funding. I have also started picking the brains of CEO’s of companies in the $5-20 million range to understand how they utilize CFO’s for decision making. Once I am confident and hit ‘go’ on this, hopefully by the summer, my fee for this service will not be cheap, yet it will allow companies in this revenue range to completely eliminate their bookkeeper, controller, and CFO or add these if they are currently nonexistent… again I know this is ambitious.
