Before Dodson Dig Co. kicks off their shoppe’s event season this Sunday, March 26 we thought it would be great idea to get to know the owner and the family behind it all. Let’s go meet the nostalgic hidden gem finder himself, Nathan Dodson.
360: How did the Dodson Dig Co idea come to life?
Nathan: To say Dodson Dig Co. has been a lifetime journey may be an understatement. As a child, I went to markets, auctions and helped my parents buy and sell items. Over the years I learned the history of items and how to look for one that are different and I have always enjoyed the challenge of finding unique pieces. Flash forward to when my wife was 9 months pregnant and my father had just passed away. I was looking for something to get me through it and take my mind off my loss. I didn’t not realize how much I learned over the years and getting back into it came naturally. I just loved the hunt.
Creation of Dodson Dig Co continued…
Nathan: I began to specialize in Americana to primitives to pottery and began to build up that side of business and over the years it grew. As it continued to grow, so did our family. My wife and I finally decided it was time to take the business to the next step. Dodson Dig Co. is truly a family business. On most days you’ll find our sweet dog and kids with us. We knew we wanted it to be something different. We wanted a place where we could give the items the proper showcase. We wanted a place folks felt comfortable and we wanted it to be a destination spot!
360: How do find your nostalgic hidden gems?
Nathan: Finding items can be kinda like being a detective. I’m always asking questions, calling people, knocking on doors, always having your eyes open and sometime going into place I shouldn’t! As the saying goes “you never know until you go”. As time goes by, you earn a reputation and people begin to bring items to you because they trust you.
360: Walk us through a typical day at Dodson Dig?
Nathan: Although we have the shoppe with regular hours and planned events, there’s no such thing as a typical day here! I never know what phone call I will get or what will come through our doors. Sometimes a buyer comes in looking for something and I will have it or I know who to call to help find it.
360: What do you love most about your job?
Nathan: I love the hunt. I love finding great items and I love making sure items go home with someone that will appreciate it. We have a lot items that have great stories and it will end up in someone’s home telling a story. And that’s pretty cool. We have one of a kind items and once they’re gone, that may be the last time we see it. Just knowing someone will appreciate it, that’s pretty cool.
360: What’s coming up next for Dodson Dig?
Nathan: This Sunday, March 26th will be our first Parking Lot Dig event of the year. We’ll have everything from a lot full of vendors, a food truck (Resident Dogs) and more. That will then be followed by our second Parking Lot Dig event on Sunday, April 30th with Meat and Three Food Truck and then our One Year Anniversary Bash and Vintage Car Cruise-in is on Friday, May 26th with live music by Miss Liberty Belle and My Girl, My Whiskey & Me and Half-Apped Food Truck. Our One Year Anniversary is also a vintage car cruise-in and will honor The American Legion.
360: That’s awesome. Thank you for sharing the story of Dodson Dig Co and your family!
