Summer is here. Can you smell it? It’s the perfect mixture of sunscreen and hamburgers on the grill.
One summer staple for our family is a good ole-fashioned picnic. Here’s a short list of my favorite places to “cop a squat” here in Greenville. [I’ve always wanted to use the phrase, ‘cop a squat.’ If you’re a fan of the movie, “Pretty Woman,” you feel me!]
In non-movie lingo, here’s my list of places to set your basket down:
1. Falls Park – This one seems obvious. You simply cannot live in a town with a park like ours and not enjoy a picnic there. Having said that, we typically throw down our blanket in the less-populated areas. Most Greenvillians park themselves in front of the falls. The kids and I walk around the corner to the foot of the falls. I keep water shoes in my trunk because the river is shallow and perfect for walking around and skipping rocks. You know, pre-electronics and fidget spinner fun!
2. McPherson Park – This is the top pick for all PGA wannabes. It’s the only park in town featuring a FREE putt-putt course, so don’t forget to bring your golf balls and clubs. There is a nice playground, a shelter with tables and the most perfect shade tree, a necessity for sweltering summer days in South Carolina.
3. Furman University – Forbes Magazine named Furman one of “America’s Most Beautiful College Campuses.” Naturally, these tree-lined streets are going to land on my list. From streams in wooded areas to lush green grass by the lake, this campus delivers spectacular views. Make sure to take a stroll around the lake when you’ve finished eating and don’t miss the Bell Tower!
4. Rock Quarry Garden – Calling all Photographers, do not visit this spot without your camera! Located off McDaniel Avenue and close to the Greenville Zoo, this secluded section of Greenville is one of the most beautifully manicured. Its’ post card back drop doesn’t get the recognition of larger parks but it is my absolute favorite and a must-see!
5. Runway Park – You’ll find this kid-friendly destination at Greenville’s downtown airport. A covered picnic shelter overlooks two playgrounds encircled by a paved track. Make sure to pack your walking shoes with your picnic lunch. If you’re not in the mood for PBJ and Doritos, pick up lunch at the Runway Cafe. Children will put their wheels aside to watch the planes take off and land.
Locales listed, now it’s time to pick a date and pack your basket!
