Our History, Your Address: Elements West…
Whether you’re a recent transplant or native to the upstate, you have a chance to become a character in the story of Greenville.
In the early 1900s, Greenville was the “Textile Center of the World”. Today, abandoned mills dot the landscape, constant reminders of those glory days. Thanks to local owners, Jerry and Donna Gilley, one such relic, E.W. Montgomery Cotton Warehouse, is becoming a part of the future.
Located in the heart of West Greenville, the site is only one-half mile from Fluor Field. Greenville contractor, Base 360, is developing one of the city’s newest apartment complexes – The Elements West.
Added to the U.S. Registry of Historic Places in 2012, the building was once home to one of the largest and most far-reaching cotton brokerages in the United States.
The Elements West will be a unique blend of the old and new. 60 loft style apartments feature stainless steel appliances and granite countertops, while keeping the exposed original brick and beams. The Common Room of the new complex was originally the Cotton Classing Room. The room was filled with long tables where bales of cotton were laid and judged for color, texture, character, trash content, and staple length. This could only be done in natural day light, so the roof over the room was all skylights. Today, the Common Room is also flooded with natural light.
The Gilley’s motto is “our history, your address” with a goal of preserving as much of the historic structure as possible without compromising style, comfort, and affordability.
Tax credits came with redeveloping a historic building, so rates are from thirty-five to seventy percent lower than comparable rentals. In-ground trash and controlled access gates are only a few of the extra amenities. “Because The Elements West is not owned by a large corporation, we will be able to pay closer attention to our tenants and the maintenance of the property,” says Community Manager, Zoe Campbell.
Greenville is rich in history and a leader in progress for South Carolina. The Elements West is a perfect example, making it the ideal place to call home.
