What Exactly Do You Do Ms. Cantley?
Kirsten Louise Cantley, Psychotherapist, MA Northwestern University. When people see this on my business card they often ask what exactly is it that I do.
The term Psychotherapy is derived from Ancient Greek psyche (meaning “breath; spirit; soul”) and therapeia (“healing; medical treatment”.) So if you took this meaning literally you would come to realize that I heal the soul. That may sound dramatic but that is exactly what I do. Not only do I treat people with depression, anxiety and bi-polar disorder I also see people that just want to find the joy in their daily life; perhaps they have never had it or they lost it somewhere along the way. As a matter of fact the majority of my patients either have situations that they would like help with or they just want to change their lives to bring more peace, joy and fulfillment into it.
A lot of time people come to me for help with situational depression or confusion. Situational Depression could mean trying to deal with a divorce, a death, losing a job or becoming an empty nester. I help people to sort out their thoughts and feelings and to become the person they want to become. I give them tools to be able to feel good about themselves and how they decided to live their lives.
I consider myself to be a Holistic Psychotherapist. What this means is that in addition to traditional talk therapy I also incorporate meditation, mindfulness, nutrition, exercise and many other natural remedies for good mental health, motivation and happiness. I teach my clients that all of these things matter when it comes to our thoughts and feelings and how we operate in our daily lives.
Therapy is good for everyone. Talking to someone in private that you trust, in a non-judgmental, safe, beautiful space is one of the best ways to have “self-care”.
Good mental health matters. Think about it this way, having good mental health allows you to make good decisions. It allows you to have better self-awareness so you can ask for what you need in a positive, loving way.
