“The best thing to hold onto in life is each other.” Audrey Hepburn
Ready or not, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Let’s start out with a little history, shall we?
How Did Valentine’s Day Begin?
Saint Valentine was a Roman priest who ministered to Christians persecuted under the Roman Empire. He performed weddings for Christian soldiers who were forbidden to marry. Valentine was imprisoned and put to death for his actions. The night before his execution, Saint Valentine wrote a letter to the jailer’s daughter. The letter was signed, “your Valentine.” There it is! The Feast of Saint Valentine was held in February. This happened to coincide with bird mating season. February became the love month. Now we know where we got the term “lovebirds.” The holiday became more commercialized during the 18th century as people began to give flowers and greeting cards. Fun Fact: The oldest known Valentine card was written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans while imprisoned in the Tower of London. Sounds like we can thank a couple of prisoners for the way we celebrate Valentines Day!
