If you are like me, you approach a trip to IKEA with lots of excitement and a little foreboding. I always wonder if I’ll get lost in the maze that is the upstairs? Where are the meatballs? Will I spent $50 or $500? I didn’t know I needed a new entertainment unit and 2 new chairs but here we are loading up the car with 20 small boxes that somehow make up said entertainment unit.
When we were redoing our bedroom we needed new bedside tables that could balance out the size of our king bed and also serve as dressers so I turned to the always good option of the IKEA Malm 3 drawer chest for the low price of $89.
I loved the storage and the size but wanted to upgrade the look so they didn’t scream “IKEA,” so I turned to Overlays. One of my blogger friends was one of the starting designers for this brilliant business that had me thinking “why didn’t I think of that?” They created a series of lightweight fretwork overlays that are specifically designed for certain Ikea pieces (you can search their website based on what Ikea piece you have!). They are easy to paint and glue to add a fun detail.
There are so many fun patterns to pick from – it was hard to pick only three to feature! We picked the Cacti set (middle above) which included three overlays for the drawers and are priced at $55 a set, which is a bargain considering the low price of the dresser. We spray painted them with gold spray paint and glued them on, and they have held up great for over 2 years.
They have so many options for many Ikea pieces including dressers, consoles, sink cabinets and even mirror overlay options!
Do you have an Ikea piece that needs an upgrade? Let me know if you order anything and make sure to follow along our latest projects on my instagram (@acreativedayblog.) Happy Spring!
