There’s a new doctor in town. Meet Dr. Roman of Clemson Eye. We recently sat down with the doctor and discussed everything from his background, how he become a Ophthalmologist, what he loves about Greenville so far and more. Without further ado, let’s meet Dr. Justin Roman!
360: How has your experience been so far since coming aboard Clemson Eye? From the people to the facilities, equipment & more.
Dr. Roman: I am very honored to have an opportunity to work for such a highly regarded practice like Clemson Eye. They have welcomed me in like a member of their own family. The staff is nice almost to a fault, I love coming to work every day just for the smiles. Our CEO, Mary Lou Parisi, has personally designed and decorated our offices with no detail overlooked. Stop by our Greenville office and get a cup a cup of coffee and a warm Otis Spunkmeyer cookie and just take in the views of Paris Mountain (no eye exam required! Too beautiful not to share.) A practice like Clemson Eye is very unique. Technology is essential in modern ophthalmology. It makes us safer, it makes us more efficient and it gets our patients the better outcomes they deserve. My background is in engineering, and I truly believe technology is improving our lives at incredible rates. Ophthalmology has had more technology growth in the last 10 years than any other medical field. You have to stay on top of it, because it is changing every day, and Clemson Eye fosters this mentality. If we think it will help our patients to see better, have faster recoveries and ultimately live better lives, then we find a way to get it. This is why I feel very blessed to be a part of it.
360: What’s your favorite part of your job & Ophthalmology?
Dr. Roman: There is nothing like having a patient recover from surgery and tell me that they haven’t seen such bright colors in years or decades. Better yet, I have had a number of patients that were able to see their grandchildren’s faces for the first time. This will just melt my heart every time.
360: Why eyes & Ophthalmology? Explain the intrigue.
Dr. Roman: The eye is the most amazing instrument of our body. It’s profoundly complex and yet very forgiving to surgical repair when necessary. I couldn’t imagine much worse then losing your vision. So now I have a skill set that helps to prevent and/or treat that exact fear. On a technical aspect, ophthalmic surgery is delicate and challenging. I love it! Whether its transplanting a layer of the cornea with tissue half the thickness of a sheet of paper, or removing someone’s cataract, it just seems at first glance that it shouldn’t work. However, decades of research have shown that eye surgical outcomes are some of the highest success rates in all of surgery. It’s absolutely amazing, what’s not to love!
360: Out of all the new procedures out there, what are you most excited about to share with your patients?
Dr. Roman: There have been some remarkable technological advances in cataract surgery over the last decade, but I am most excited about providing the newest techniques in corneal transplantation. Over the last 10 years, a technique for tissue sparing corneal transplantation has progressively improved. Today, the success rates are far beyond older techniques and this translates into better vision for my patients and faster recoveries.
360: Since returning to Greenville, what do you love most? We’ve heard you’re a competitive runner.
Dr. Roman: I grew up in the Rocky Mountains of New Mexico, so terrain is essential to my well-being. It is so nice to be back into the mountains and having access to trail running and hiking. While many, including myself, might agree that long-distance running can tiptoe the line of sanity, the Swamp Rabbit Trail speaks for itself and I love just heading out on a long run down that trail and taking in the picturesque scenes. It’s also really great to see my wife so happy to be back in the upstate, where she grew up, and all of her family still lives. My parents were just visiting for a few weeks, and always mention that there is not a downtown like Greenville any where else, so unique. Our daughter just turned one, and we couldn’t imagine raising her anywhere else.
360: Awesome! Thank you very much for your time. Keep up the great work!
